The very first day that Dr. Valery Shikankov tried to call an ambulance, he sounded and rang, but after three hours he never ever got through, and so he gave up. His father was a manager for a number of the mega-projects that marked the late Soviet age, including a massive hydroelectric power plant on the Angara River, and he taught Shikankov– along with his brother or sisters Evgeny and Natalia– patriotism and work principles and robustness. Dr. Evgeny Vyshlov told me that he invested numerous years working with Shikankov at the cardiological institute in Tomsk, and was struck by his coworker’s quiet, unassuming commitment.
