South Dakota’s 3 major medical facilities– Avera McKennan, Sanford USD Medical Center, and Monument Health Rapid City Health center– are apparently having a hard time to find area for their seriously ill COVID-19 patients.
Both Sanford USD Medical Center and Monument Health Rapid City Health center reported their intensive care systems run out area. Avera McKennan reported just 6.7 percent of its ICU beds are offered on December 2.
As a result, some South Dakotans are being flown out of state for treatment.
Robert J. Sliper, a COVID-19 client and South Dakota resident, was carried to Colorado– over 340 miles away from his house– in November after local hospitals declared they didn’t have the area to look after him, according to a report by the Rapid City Journal
Prior to the pandemic, many of South Dakota’s medical facilities were restricted as some rural residents anticipated to take a trip a great distance to reach the nearest hospital. As the state handles a recent rise in COVID-19 cases, South Dakota’s medical centers are running out of space and staff.

Avera Health, which owns Avera McKennan and over a lots little medical facilities throughout South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska, initiated its coronavirus rise strategy.
The plan consisted of medical facilities doubling their ICU capability by delaying some non-emergency surgeries, cross-training medical facility staff to work with COVID-19 clients, and repurposing other areas into ICUs, Dr. David Basel, Avera’s vice president of scientific quality, informed the Journal
Most health centers associated with Avera Health are “at, near or above” capability to deal with COVID-19 patients, said Basel. The vice president continued keeping in mind Avera Health is seeing a decline in its offered labor force as 200 to 300 of Avera’s 17,000 staff members are out due to COVID-19 exposure or infection.
Monument Health Rapid City Health center also enacted plans to manage the infection’s rise. Under the plan, the health center aims to add six more ICU beds. Those beds won’t likely be readily available up until July of next year, Dr. Srinivas K. Gangineni, ICU Medical Director at Monolith Health Rapid City Health center, told the paper.
In the meantime, the medical facility will divert patients to other medical facilities.
South Dakota reported an average of 98 brand-new daily cases this past week.
The seven-day average of cases in the state has declined compared to the previous two-week period from November 30 to December 3, according to data from John Hopkins University. The state saw record cases on November 11 after reporting over 1,458 brand-new ones that day.
” If cases were to double for another month or two, we would be making some hard choices,” stated Basel. “We have actually had reports that there are locations in Iowa where they are beginning to really look at whether it’s good to put people who are over 75 with COVID-19 on ventilators.”
” We’re not at that point, and I hope that we never get to any kind of point like that. However, there may come a day,” Basel continued.
On The Other Hand, South Dakota Guv Kristi Noem mocked President-elect Joe Biden‘s message reassuring Americans struggling during the pandemic on Twitter recently. She tweeted a quoted expression, “‘ I’m from the government, and I’m here to help,” which President Ronald Reagan called “the 9 most frightening words in the English language” from a 1986 press conference.
Avera McKennan, Sanford USD Medical Center and Monument Health Rapid City Health center didn’t respond to Newsweek’s ask for remark in time for publication.
