An Oklahoma school district provided an apology Sunday after dealing with scathing reaction for publishing a picture of a football event revealing trainees and athletes neither using masks nor social distancing.
” Jenks Public Schools acknowledges and accepts this criticism. There were a lot of high school students without masks and a lot of high school students in close contact with one another,” Jenks Public Schools composed in a Facebook post. “This is not the sort of safe environment JPS looks for to create for students and employee.”
The post continued, “JPS understands the importance of social distancing and masks. At future secondary occasions, Jenks Public Schools pledges to do more to maintain more stringent security protocols. The absence of safety protocols at the state national championship was not up to the requirement that is expected. Jenks Public Schools and Jenks High School seriously excuses this error.”
The apology released on Sunday comes a day after the school’s Facebook page showed a photo of trainees and athletes celebrating a recent triumph, relatively unconcerned to mitigation efforts against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The post on Saturday featured 4 pictures revealing players, coaches, staff, cheerleaders and students crowded together on the field and in the stands, with really few masks in sight.
After posting the picture on Saturday, the school faced extreme reaction, with numerous members of the neighborhood criticizing the school for allowing the celebration to go on in the middle of rising cases, deaths and hospitalizations associated with COVID-19
” Extremely selfish,” one Facebook user composed, while another comment read, “Their health care workers are overwhelmed, tired and some passing away, but let’s fill the stadium for a super-spreader game! Selfless morons.”

While speaking to the Daily Beast, Elise Ramsey, a 22- year-old alum of Jenks High School and a present trainee at the University of Tulsa, stated, “Health experts have been publicly pleading the community to do whatever we can to slow spread for several weeks now,” adding that she was “frightened” by the post.
Jenks Public Schools directed Newsweek to the apology provided on Sunday and said it had no additional comment at this time.
According to the health department of Tulsa County, where Jenks is located, there are presently more than 36,000 confirmed COVID cases, as well as at least 289 deaths, in the county.
